Sea urchins are widely considered to be the major grazers in temperate subtidal systems, with herbivorous fish being browsers of minor importance. This paper reviews spatial and temporal patterns in these herbivores on rocky reels in temperate Australasia, with the aim of assessing their relative impacts on patch structure and dynamics. Herbivorous fishes are widespread and make up a significant numerical component the reel fish fauna. Sea urchins are also abundant, but not all geographic locations support actively grazing species. Both fish and sea urchins exhibit distinct patterns of distribution among depth strata. Within depth strata, all herbivores are restricted to (sea urchins) or forage preferentially in (fish) particular habitat patches, causing a mosaic of different feeding activities. These patches are either related to specific features of the habitat (e.g. Kelp patches, topography) or behavioural interactions. Foraging by sea urchins and demersal-nesting damselfishes is intense and persistent, whereas in the kelp-feeding fish Odax cyanomelas, foraging reaches greatest intensity at predictable locations during a few months of every year. Many fish and sea urchins consume some algae in preference to others. However, feeding preferences may determine the nature of the impact only in fishes. For sea urchins, preference may occasionally determine the order in which algae are consumed, but at high densities they consume all available macroalgae. Impacts of both types of herbivore on the abundance of algae have been recorded. Some sea urchins (e.g. Evechinus chloroticus, Centrostephanus rodgersii) appear to severely modify biogenic habitat structure by maintaining ‘barrens’ (areas devoid of macroalgae) over long periods. In contrast to this, the effects of fishes may be more transitory (e.g. seasonal impact of Odax cyanomelas on brown algae) or occur at smaller spatial scales (e.g. nest sites maintained by male Parma victoriae) Herbivorous and other fishes appear to respond to spatial patterns in algal distributions, rallier than having it major impact upon them. The relative effects of fish and sea urchins on the long-term dynamics of kelp forests are unknown, hut temporal patterns in herbivore abundance and behaviour, and algal demography arc urgent targets for research.  相似文献

  • 1 The underwater light climate in Loch Ness is described in terms of mixing depth (Zm) and depth of the euphoric zone (Zeu). During periods of complete mixing, Zm equates with the mean depth of the loch (132 m), but even during summer stratification the morphometry of the loch and the strong prevailing winds produce a deep thermocline and an epilimnetic mixed layer of about 30 m or greater. Hence, throughout the year the quotient Zm/Zeu is exceptionally high and the underwater light climate particularly unfavourable for phytoplankton production and growth.
  • 2 Phytoplankton biomass expressed as chlorophyll a is very low in Loch Ness, with a late summer maximum of less than 1.5 mg chlorophyll a m-3 in the upper 30 m of the water column. This low biomass and the resulting very low photosynthetic carbon fixation within the water column are evidence that a severe restraint is imposed on the rate at which phytoplankton can grow in the loch.
  • 3 The chlorophyll a content per unit of phytoplankton biovolume and the maximum, light-saturated specific rate of photosynthesis are both parameters which might be influenced by the light climate under which the phytoplankton have grown. However, values obtained from Loch Ness for both chlorophyll a content (mean 0.0045 mg mm-3) and maximum photosynthetic rate (1–4 mg C mg Chla-1 h-1) are within the range reported from other lakes.
  • 4 Laboratory bioassays with the natural phytoplankton community from Loch Ness on two occasions in late summer when the light climate in the loch is at its most favourable, suggest that even then limitation of phytoplankton growth is finely balanced between light and phosphorus limitation. Hence, for most of the year, when the light climate is less favourable, phytoplankton growth will be light limited.
  • 5 Quotients relating mean annual algal biomass as chlorophyll a (c. 0.5 mg Chla m-3) and the probable annual specific areal loading of total phosphorus (0.4–1.7 g TP m-2 yr-1) suggest that the efficiency with which phytoplankton is produced in Loch Ness per unit of TP loading is extremely low when compared with values from other Scottish lochs for which such an index has been calculated. This apparent inefficiency can be attributed to suppression of photosynthetic productivity in the water column due to the unfavourable underwater light climate.
  • 6 These several independent sources of evidence lead to the conclusion that phytoplankton development in Loch Ness is constrained by light rather than by nutrients. Loch Ness thus appears to provide an exception to the generally accepted paradigm that phytoplankton development in lakes of an oligotrophic character is constrained by nutrient availability.

The hatching responses of Globodera rostochiensis (golden potato cyst nematode) to purified and partially-purified preparations of natural (including the potato glycoalkaloids solanine and α-chaconine) and artificial hatching factors (HFs) were bimodal. At least 10 HFs, mostly anionic, were resolved from potato root leachate by a combination of gel permeation and ion-exchange chromatography. Whereas potato roots were the principal source of HFs, haulm leachate also contained such chemicals. Root leachate from aseptically-grown potato plants lacked several HFs which were present in conventionally-produced leachate.  相似文献

The effectiveness of resistance to subterranean clover mottle sobemovirus (SCMoV) previously identified in different genotypes of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) inoculated with infective sap in the glasshouse, was tested in two field experiments which used the grazing animal as virus vector. Replicated plots each consisting of paired test rows of 20 different genotypes were used. Clover plants infected with SCMoV were transplanted in between the paired test rows and these acted as sources of the virus for spread by grazing sheep. Although used in different years at different sites with different virus isolates, the field exposure methodology employed produced consistent results. The genotypes each behaved similarly in both experiments as regards the relative extents of SCMoV infection that developed, levels ranging from 0–98%. The previously identified resistance in six ‘highly resistant’ and three ‘partially resistant’ cultivars was effective under field conditions. However, the ‘partial resistance’ in three others was overcome, cvs Green Range and Mt Barker developing levels of infection approaching those in ‘susceptible’ cultivars, while an intermediate infection level developed in cv. Karridale. The three cultivars in which partial resistance was not effective all belonged to ssp. subterraneum. In subterranean clover breeding programmes, field screening using the grazing animal as a vector is advisable to determine whether SCMoV resistance found by sap inoculation is still effective under field conditions.  相似文献

Samples collected in 1994 and 1995 from commercial crops of chickpeas and lentils growing in the agricultural region of south-west Western Australia were tested for infection with alfalfa mosaic (AMV) and cucumber mosaic (CMV) viruses, and for members of the family Potyviridae using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In 1994 no virus was detected in the 21 chickpea crops tested but in 1995, out of 42 crops, AMV was found in two and CMV in seven. With lentils, AMV and/or CMV was found in three out of 14 crops in 1994 and 4 out of 13 in 1995, both viruses being detected in two crops in each year. Similar tests on samples from chickpea and lentil crops and plots growing at experimental sites, revealed more frequent infection with both viruses. No potyvirus infection was found in chickpeas or lentils in agricultural areas either in commercial crops or at experimental sites. However, bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) was detected along with AMV and CMV in irrigated plots of chickpeas and lentils at a site in Perth. When samples of seed from infected crops or plots of chickpeas and lentils were germinated and leaves or roots of seedlings tested for virus infection by ELISA, AMV and CMV were found to be seed-borne in both while BYMV was seed-borne in lentils. The rates of transmission found through seed of chickpea to seedlings were 0.1–1% with AMV and 0.1–2% with CMV. Seed transmission rates with lentil were 0.1–5% for AMV, 0.1–1% for CMV and 0.8% for BYMV. Individual seed samples of lentil and chickpea sometimes contained both AMV and CMV. With both species, infection with AMV and CMV was sometimes found in commercial seed stocks or seed stocks from multiplication crops of advanced selections nearing release as new cultivars. Seed-borne virus infection has important practical implications, as virus sources can be re-introduced every year to chickpea and lentil crops or plots through sowing infected seed stocks leading to spread of infection by aphid vectors, losses in grain yield and further contamination of seed stocks.  相似文献

Arbutus unedo is a sclerophyllous evergreen, characteristic of Mediterranean coastal scrub vegetation. In Italy, trees of A. unedo have been found close to natural CO2 vents where the mean atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is about 2200 μmol mol?1. Comparisons were made between trees growing in elevated and ambient CO2 concentrations to test for evidence of adaptation to long-term exposure to elevated CO2. Leaves formed at elevated CO2 have a lower stomatal density and stomatal index and higher specific leaf area than those formed at ambient CO2, but there was no change in carbon to nitrogen ratios of the leaf tissue. Stomatal conductance was lower at elevated CO2 during rapid growth in the spring. In mid-summer, under drought stress, stomatal closure of all leaves occurred and in the autumn, when stress was relieved, the conductance of leaves at both elevated and ambient CO2 increased. In the spring, the stomatal conductance of the new flush of leaves at ambient CO2 was higher than the leaves at elevated CO2, increasing instantaneous water use efficiency at elevated CO2. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements suggested that elevated CO2 provided some protection against photoinhibition in mid-summer. Analysis of A/Ci curves showed that there was no evidence of either upward or downward regulation of photosynthesis at elevated CO2. It is therefore anticipated that A. unedo will have higher growth rates as the ambient CO2 concentrations increase.  相似文献

Abstract. The eggs of the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), are successfully attacked by Trissolcus basalis (Woll.) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) and are recognized as hosts by a secretion applied to the egg chorion. This secretion is produced by the follicular cells in the proximal region of the ovariole of the female pentatomid and functions as an adhesive for attaching the eggs to the oviposition substrate. The adhesive and kairomone activity could be partially removed with water. This water extract elicited host recognition behaviour in T. basalis when applied to glass beads which stuck together as the extract dried. The adhesive and kairomonal activity was removed completely with acetone since acetone-washed host eggs were not recognized by T. basalis. Application of the acetone extract to glass beads stimulated ovipositional probes by T. basalis. The adhesive appeared to be composed of a mucopolysaccharide–protein complex.  相似文献
